MISO-Pearl Street Collaboration

We're Ready to Unblock
MISO's Queue.

In August 2024, MISO announced it would integrate our software automation solutions to accelerate their interconnection study processes. This collaboration represents the largest-ever investment in interconnection study automation made by a transmission provider.

The opportunity

Interconnection, meet automation

Automation has the potential to solve some of interconnection’s hardest problems. Benefits include:
  • Massive engineering time savings, delivering actionable results to developers within hours, not months

  • Increased productivity of transmission provider engineers, allowing them to process higher project volumes

  • Process replicability, empowering developers to better anticipate study results and make data-driven decisions

  • Reduction in error and variability
  • Process optimization, allowing transmission providers to evaluate impacts of changes quickly and quantitatively
The solution

How will we expedite
interconnection at MISO?

By mid-Q1 2025, we will deploy a first-of-its-kind, full automation system to rapidly process DPP Phase 1 interconnection requests.

The system will automate all of the processes in the flowchart to the right, many of which have caused delays in request processing. Automating these historically time-consuming and engineering judgment-heavy components will enable MISO to produce Phase 1 results up to 200x faster.

Automation is a key ingredient, but not the only ingredient, to a more efficient interconnection process. We work with all stakeholders to implement the full suite of solutions.

Answering your

FAQS

When will this implementation be finalized?
  • Early 2025, but both Pearl Street and MISO will keep stakeholders informed throughout the development timeline.
Can we still use Interconnect™ to run studies in MISO?
  • Yes. Interconnect™ was developed to provide indicative results to guide decision making. However, the new system, debuting in 2025, will be “production quality” and aims to set a new standard for study automation in transmission planning and generator interconnection.
Is Pearl Street also developing a new version of Interconnect™?
  • Our current goal is to work with MISO to build a system that allows them to run a larger volume of studies as fast as possible. Over the next few months, we'll be deploying, testing, and refining a new automation solution. Once complete, an enhanced version of Interconnect™ will also become available to developers.
  • In other words, we have to build the car before you can take it for a test drive! But when finished, developers in MISO will be able to replicate studies proactively or at a decision point, that entirely mirror MISO’s official results.
